This choir started with a few people singing Gospel and mucking around in an underground car park in Northcote. Since then we have become a proper choir of around 40 people, singing in a hall with polished floorboards and down lights in Fitzroy. The choir is proudly not only gender balanced, but section balanced; with the biggest section being Bass.
The choir’s roots were in jamming and singing Black Gospel. Now the choir aims to be about the singing experience as a whole, and exploring this as a group. So we are are open to all genres, creative ideas and collaborations. We have quite an emphasis on improvisation, techniques, no techniques, being a hippy, being a classical ninja. Types of songs/genres so far have included; a lot of Gospel, Classical hymns, Hebrew love songs, Georgian polyphonic songs (all from the legendary Joseph Jordania),French heartbreak songs, doo-wop love songs. We also sing Christmas Carols.
Past gigs have included: Collaborations with well respected local bands ‘Hello Satelites’, Gabriella Cohen (Gasometer/Northcote Social Club), Brother Johnson (Curtain Bandroom), collaboration with other multidisciplinary artists at the ‘Found Festival’ at Shadow Electric, a few ‘combined choirs’ gigs including with Melbourne Mass Gospel Choir and Exaudi Youth Choir, singing in the Royal Exhibition Building for the Finders Keepers Markets, The Boite Singers Festival, The End of the Line Festival, The Zoo (!), FIGMENT Festival, Amnesty Festival of Hope, Gertrude St Projection Festival and Christmas Carols everywhere.
We have been very very lucky to have had esteemed guest leaders such as Gordon Hamilton (The Australian Voices), Joseph Jordania, Sue Johnson, Mal Webb, Stephen Tabener, Kavisha Massela and Peter Gleeson from Spontaneous Choir.
We would like to sing in more random places that have great acoustics such as foyers, penthouses, tunnels. We are also open to collaboration with other creative people, dancers, writers etc. We would love to be involved in making something meaningful about something local, at an excitingly high standard.
Occasionally we get free spots available. We would absolutely love to get everybody on board singing with us, but section balance is important. If you are keen, please send us a FB message with a bit of a spiel about yourself including musical background and your email address. We also usually advertise for positions on Facebook.
